Childhood seems like something that starts at birth and then gently fades away as we make the transition to adolescence. But truth be told, childhood is more like a set of islands that we leave and then return to over and over again throughout our lives. It’s a retreat, a sanctuary, a place where anything is possible and everything seems within reach. Movies have a unique power to tap into our childhood memories unlike any other medium, and this is especially true of movies that we watched during our teenage years. Here are some of the movies that defined my adolescence and why they mattered so much:

In Search of Identity: American Pie (1999)

As I was entering my teenage years, I felt like I was constantly searching for something. I didn’t know what it was, exactly, but it had to do with figuring out who I was and where I fit in the world. In this sense, American Pie spoke right to me. I related to the characters and their struggles to assert themselves and figure out their place in high school. What’s more, the movie allowed me to explore my own sense of humor, which was still developing at the time. American Pie showed me that it was okay to be a little immature and crude sometimes, and that not taking yourself too seriously was key to surviving adolescence.

The Power of Friendship: Stand By Me (1986)

As I moved into my later teenage years, I became more and more aware of the importance of my friendships. Stand By Me, based on a short story by Stephen King, was a poignant reminder of just how powerful those relationships could be. The movie follows a group of boys as they set out on a journey to find the body of a missing boy, and in doing so, they discover a lot about themselves and each other. For me, Stand By Me was all about the bond that existed between these characters, and how that bond helped them navigate some of the toughest times of their young lives. It made me appreciate the friends I had, and inspired me to be there for them when they needed me.

A Sense of Adventure: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

As I approached the end of my teenage years, I was beginning to feel the pull of adulthood. Going to college, leaving home, finding a job… it was all starting to feel very real. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was the perfect antidote to that sense of impending responsibility. The movie is essentially about a guy who decides to take a day off from school and have the time of his life. It’s a celebration of the freedom and adventure that comes with being young, and it reminded me that there was still so much more to life than just growing up and being responsible. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was the perfect reminder that, no matter what happens in life, it’s important to hold onto that sense of wonder and excitement that defines our youth.

Looking back on these movies, I realize just how important they were to me during my teenage years. They helped me make sense of my own struggles and emotions, and they allowed me to connect with a world that was bigger than just me. They inspired me to embrace my own sense of humor, to appreciate the friendships I had, and to never lose sight of the adventure that life has to offer. These movies will always be a cherished part of my adolescence, and a reminder of a time in my life when anything seemed possible.
