Teaching Strategies for English Language Development

Introduction:

The English Language Learning (ELL) population in our schools is growing at an unprecedented rate. According to statistics, ELL students will soon make up more than 10% of the student population in our district. As members of the English Language Development (ELD) team, it is our responsibility to prepare teachers to meet the needs of these students.

Goals:

Our goal is to provide teachers with the necessary tools and strategies to support ELL students in their classrooms. We aim to:

  • Develop and implement effective instruction and assessment practices that support ELLs
  • Increase understanding of language acquisition and development
  • Collaborate with content-area teachers to enhance classroom practices and ensure access to the core curriculum for ELLs

Strategies:

Our teaching strategies for English Language Development will be divided into three categories: Content Instruction, Language Development, and Assessment.

Content Instruction:

The following strategies will help content-area teachers optimize classroom settings for ELLs:

  • Provide audio and visual aids to reinforce vocabulary and concepts.
  • Use explicit instruction to provide clear explanations of key concepts.
  • Use graphic organizers, outlines, and other visual tools to aid in comprehension and recall.
  • Incorporate cooperative learning activities that provide opportunities for language practice and interaction.
  • Adapt curriculum to be relevant and engaging to ELLs, such as using culturally responsive materials and real-world examples.

Language Development:

The following strategies will help teachers promote and support language development in ELLs:

  • Use language scaffolds such as word walls, sentence frames, and highly contextualized language.
  • Provide ample opportunities for language practice through extended response writing, discussions, and oral presentations.
  • Encourage students to use academic language in classroom discussions and writing.
  • Teach vocabulary explicitly and systematically, providing multiple exposures and opportunities for practice.

Assessment:

The following strategies will help teachers assess ELLs and monitor progress:

  • Use formative assessments to measure ongoing progress and understanding.
  • Ensure assessments are culturally responsive and unbiased.
  • Provide multiple ways for students to demonstrate understanding, such as oral presentations, graphic organizers, and modeling.
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and make decisions about intervention and support.

Providing effective instruction to ELLs requires collaboration, planning, and intentional teaching strategies. Our team is dedicated to providing ongoing support and professional development in order to ensure success for all students. By implementing the teaching strategies outlined above, we believe that teachers can help ELLs reach their full potential and meet academic standards.
